The Artist’s Way

I tried to get through the Artist’s Way but I just couldn’t. I think I got to chapter 4. Is this because I’m creatively blocked? Or because I have trouble sticking with projects to the end? Or perhaps The Artist’s Way just doesn’t work for me. It’s a little heavy on the religious aspect, and I don’t mind delving into spirituality a bit, but it seems to focus on religion in a heavy-handed way. Or perhaps it’s just too big a commitment, like taking a class, because you need to devote so much time to it. I only have one friend who actually finished it so I know I’m not the only one. So, has anyone reading this ever finished the Artist’s Way? Has it worked well for anyone out there, changed their life, made them an uber-creative person?

Hey Jen! (It’s Sara from class)
I completely had the same experience while trying to get through The Artist’s Way. I actually attempted to start the commitment to that book two different times! As with most books, I did end up taking aspects that were useful to me and applied some of them to my life…things like the artist dates (with yourself) are a great idea- very logical, but something that is easy to overlook with our busy schedules. It’s pretty funny, because I started going through the book hoping that it would help me with follow-through in my own painting process- and then I didn’t follow through with the book! (Sigh). I think I was more drawn to the layout of the book graphically then the actual content (us visual people right?!?)

That’s a good point Sara. I guess I did end up taking a bit from it and applying it. I did end up doing the morning pages and have stuck with it, although I don’t write them every morning. Only when I have time and when I get the feeling to write them. I do think the morning pages are quite relaxing, and it does get all the gobbeldy-gook out of your head. I think the morning pages help with writing skills as well.
